Here’s a quick little project I have been meaning to make for about a year now. I finally made it a priority this weekend as my current tote barely fits my Mac and the zipper teeth scratch along the sides…it’s a pretty nasty sound. I just wanted a thin case to protect against scratches, nothing heavy duty.

MATERIALS

I bought all my materials at local thrift stores, where you can find great vintage craft supplies.

  • Vintage Tea Towel- Most tea towels are a perfect fit, but any fabric would do.
  • Yarn- I chose a macrame yarn because it’s thicker.
  • Buttons- I initially was going to have a few buttons as to latch the front flap. I changed my mind halfway through and opted for just tying the yarn.
  • Needle & Thread or sewing machine.

STEP ONE: Lay the tea towel face up on a flat surface. Place your laptop approximately four inches from the top of the tea towel.

STEP TWO: Fold the lower portion of the towel up, adjust so it covers the laptop completely.  You want a pretty snug fit, so only allow only about 1/4″ extra on the left and right sides. Be sure to take in consideration how thick your laptop is.

STEP THREE: Pin the at the top where the two layers meet.

STEP FOUR: If you’re using a sewing machine I recommend putting a couple pins along each side. I’m not the most precise seamstress in the world, so I like to be generous with my pin usage.

STEP FIVE: Knot the yarn around a bobby pin or safety pin.

STEP SIX: Pull the pin through the open hem.

*This tea towel had a large hem along the top that was open on the sides. You can easily create your own by folding over the top 1/2″ and sewing along the edge to make a tube.

STEP SEVEN: Sew along the right and left sides of the tea towel.

Note: Make sure not to sew over the yarn/hem opening.

You’re almost done! :)

STEP EIGHT: Flip the cover the proper way.

STEP NINE: Insert Laptop! Yay!

Now my laptop is truly safe and sound inside my favorite computer bag. And yes, I know I can’t zip up the bag, but I always use it because of it’s PERFECT strap length. ha!
