Homecoming Pillowcase Dress

Last weekend I spent an afternoon with my girl Kalyn. She wanted to make a pillowcase dress for her Homecoming dance. To make the dress we followed the same basic steps found in my DIY tutorial. We added a few “details” that I’ll briefly share.

Kalyn is a petite little thing and with a queen pillowcase, we had lots of fabric to cut off to get the the proper length.

A] This is a strapless dress held up by 3/4 inch elastic. We wanted the lace to peep out from the inside, so I it sewed on at the same time as I made the top hem to feed the elastic through. Also, because of the width of the opening, I knew we’d get some natural ruching with the elastic.

B] Rather than having to wear a belt, I created an empire waist. Going back I would have put it a few inches higher to make the overall fit of the dress tighter and more form fitting. I cut three varying widths of fabric, keeping the edges raw. I sewed a decorative stitch down the center of the band to hold the layers together. I know I probably created the waistline way more complicated than it had to be, so I will save you the details. Needless to say I put elastic between the fabric band and the dress.

The theme for the dance was “Roaring 20′s” so we made a cute headband to match the dress.
