CONCENTRATION vs CONSECRATION

Oh my! I am firm believer that you must be able to laugh at yourself! We all do stupid things sometimes and taking yourself too seriously is no fun! Well, that being said, I am a FOOL!

Last week I read a devotional and it really suck with me…the excerpt below in particular.

Consecration is the act of continually separating myself from everything except that which God has appointed me to do. It is not a one-time experience but an ongoing process. Am I continually separating myself and looking to God everyday of my life?

-My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers

The problem?!?! I totally read consecration as concentration, yeah... I am a smarty!! Consecration isn’t a word we often use and maybe you’ve never even heard it. Let me tell you, it makes a world of a difference when the passage reads in context.

I initially walked away challenged to concentrate. As a creative, my mind wanders all over. I am a dreamer and a visionary. I have notebooks full new design concepts and noteworthy ideas. Some days I try to balance way too much and take on more than I can handle… because well, they are all exciting projects. I often just start “doing” and not always first seeking out what I am “called” to do… hence my desire to focus and concentrate on what is before me each day. It’s that daily check… why I am doing what I am doing and have I sought God in this.

So yes, concentrating on what I am called to doing great. Though, it’s an act of my own accord. It’s focusing my undivided attention on a task and not cluttering my mind with other thoughts or ideas. Concentration is healthy and needed to achieve my goals.

Consecration however, is much more. It’s a surrender and commitment to a higher purpose, not of my own. It’s the daily obedience in my current circumstance and trusting God’s (often unknown) plan for provision. It’s following, not leading.

I am “planted” right here, right now for a purpose.

Wardrobe Wednesday | Leafy Blouse

This oversized blouse has been in my closet for years… in the past I’ve belted it but today I tied the front, adding a layering option with the bright pink tank. I do love the tribal vibe of this top and I am sure there are countless others just like it at you neighborhood thrift store! Annnd yes, my hair is in need of some major lovin (pretend you don’t notice my roots)…. I am thinking of going for a warm milk-chocolate brown?!? It just seems like so much work because black is so hard to remove from my hair. haha.

Sweet Freedom

Chocolate! You know that fifth food group that often can make a good day, great?!?

I am excited to share a behind the scenes look at the Chocolate Industry and all the social injustice issues involved. Julia’s Poppies and my good friends at Making Noise, Inc. have teamed up to launch the Sweet Freedom Campaign. We believe our collective voices can make a difference against social injustice.

The Sweet Freedom Campaign is a social media, community driven movement to help educate about the issue of human trafficking and child labor on cocoa farms in West Africa, and to provide tangible means of fighting the issue by addressing demand.

If you’re not familiar with the human trafficking and child labor issues, I would highly encourage you to take a moment and educate yourself. I will be sharing more facts and how you can get involved here on the blog.

Join the movement on Facebook and Twitter.

Not Wedding Palette Preview

Just around the corner is The Not Wedding in Atlanta. If you’re not familiar… go visit their website! It’s such a rad way to bring local wedding vendors together to create the ultimate experience for brides. If you’re a bride in the area, get your tickets before they sell out. Bring along a friend (or your mom) and get inspiration for you big day. I attended last year and highly recommend it! :)

This year Julia’s Poppies is one of the stationers. I thought I should start sharing a bit of what I am working on. Here’s a look at the palette!

DIY | Tealight Place Holder

Over the past year I have had lots of time with my niece, and a good portion of that time has been feeding her. I had tried to think of creative ways to use the food jars. The occasion finally arose!

Metallic Christmas Eve Dinner

Here’s how to create seating assignments that will light up the night. boom, boom, ch!

1// Collect baby food jars. If you’re not a mama or have easy access to a baby, here are a couple of options:

+ Buy any “Earth’s Best” organic fruit blend baby food. It’s like a mini smoothie! So good!

+ There are several listings of jars on eBay. This option is not as tasty. ;)

2// Remove the label from the jar. Soaking in water for an hour helps to peel right off.

3// Make a mix of 2 parts paint, 1 part water. Pour a small amount into the jar, covering the bottom. Screw the jar lid back on and shake. Remove the lid and pour any excess back into the paint mixture. Place bottom-up onto old newspaper, allowing the paint to drain. After an hour, flip the jars right-side-up and allow another hour or two to dry.

+ I added some white glitter into the paint mix for some of the jars. This created extra shine when the candle is lit.

4// Once the paint has dried, cover the ribbed edge of the jar with patterned washi tape. Make sure not to have the tape exposed to the inside of the jar, as this is a fire hazard.

5// With a sharpie, print each guest’s name.

6// Place the tea light inside the jar and light.

*If you haven’t already, be sure to check out my earlier post on this Metallic themed dinner.

Happy crafting!

Wardrobe Wednesday | Aztec Skirt

Complete! This aztec print fabric has been sitting on my shelf for over a year and a half, waiting to be transformed into a garment. I believe it was a tablecloth in a former life, but now a skirt. Yay! The fabric already had a hem (love that!), and I followed similar steps from my past DIY tutorial.

DIY // Metallic Table Setting

Add a little twist with the great outdoors and create a beautiful table setting.  The process is simple and provides a bit of glam. This is perfect for a romantic dinner or party decor.

1// Collect a variety of branches from bushes and trees.

2// Spray paint the elements outside on old newspaper. We used silver, gold, black and white paint. Let dry for a couple hours.

3// Embellished a few leaves and branches with glitter. Just sprinkle glitter onto the freshly painted pieces.

4// We used gold wrapping paper to create a horizontal runner on the table. Tape the ends under the table. The gift wrap served as a perfect base and brought in more metallics.

5// Arrange the branches in vintage milkglass vases and scatter on the table. Incorporating candlesticks sets the mood and allows the metallics to sparkle in the light.

6// There are no rules, just have fun.

Topsail Beach || Family Vacation

Mmmm… it’s getting close to lunch time and these are sounding quite good! I loooooove me some fish tacos! Last spring on family vacation we prepared this dinner, so fresh and colorful!

Topsail Beach || Family Vacation

These spreads are from a photo album I designed for my parents. I’m trying* to get better at doing something tangible (or at least posting) with photos.

Have a great Monday…and for those of you with the day off…enjoy!

New Zealand | True Friendship

True Friendship: identifying with someone in thought, heart, and spirit. The whole experience of life is designed to enable us to enter into this closest relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you’re a bride-to-be and on the hunt for budget-friendly stationery, we updated the shop with some previously loved designs. More will be posted, so keep checking back. And of course, our custom design is available, but limited due to the time and detail put into each suite. Contact info@juliaspoppies.com for pricing.

Here’s a look at our table from Christmas Eve. Next week I will share more photos and steps on how to create the same design for pennies. We used natural elements, so start scouting your neighborhood for cool bushes, branches, and leaves. This would make a cute Valentine’s Day table setting!! :)

Have a wonderful weekend!

it's my birthday

I am pumped and ready for another year of life…new lessons to be learned and new adventures to be had. In attempts of exercising an attitude of gratitude, here are 28 reasons I have to be thankful, in no particular order.

1// Quiet Mornings and hot coffee. Oh baby, oh baby!
2// My supportive and loving parents, and the example they have been over the years.
3// The Lord’s provision and the HOPE I have in Him.
4// Cheese. All kinds of cheese!
5// Snail mail from a friend. Ahhh… written words, a lost art.
6// My car. Miraculously it continues to keep running.
7// Lyrics that make you stop in your tracks.
8// Veggies. Spinach and carrots will always be number one on my grocery list!
9// Wedding engagements everywhere…because that means business. :)
10// Red Lipstick. I may get it on my teeth from time to time, but it’s still sexy. ha!
11// My sisters and brother…can’t break this bond. We are bffs!
12// Impromptu dance parties…in my room, by myself, in front of the mirror.
13// Long runs that heal the soul…and burn my legs. No greater feeling.
14// Technology’s ability to instantly connect, regardless of the miles between.
15// Five inch heels…and still being shorter than most.
16// The launch of Yours is the Earth and my oh-so-rad business partner!
17// My local church. I love how they value Truth, creativity, and serving the community.
18// Scissors. For all my ghetto “cut-and-wear” fashionista projects.
19// When music is so loud, it’s beating in your chest. Yep, love that!
20// Clients that trust me to do my thang.
21// My college girlfriends…ya’ll mean more to me that you’ll ever know!!
22// Cafe Intermezzo. Irish Cream Cheesecake- seriously you must try this!!
23// Weekly Podcasts. Some of my favs are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
24// Head scarfs that allow me not to comb my hair for months. This may change, I got 2 brushes for Christmas! haha
25// The endless supply of treasure at thrift stores.
26// Long chats with friends that inspire and challenge me to be a better artist and person.
27// My niece, Julianne. The cutest little goober ever!
28// The saving grace and message of Christ “which is painful and wonderful at once. The Gospel is—we are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared to believe, and at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope.
-Tim & Kathy Keller // The Meaning of Marriage

wardrobe wednesday

Yep, my tights are neon…perfect if I ever become a road worker or school crossing guard. In attempts to prevent blinding those I ran into, I did not wear them out… BUT I thought they’d be fun to photograph. The yellow tights and teal vintage tank make such a fun pair, don’t you think?!

The other day I made some butternut squash and apple soup. I followed this Whole Foods recipe. I highly recommend it for these chilly January days! Like most soups, the favor was best on the second day.

It's a Wrap || CHRISTMAS WRAPPING

Holiday wrapping ideas were all the buzz. I loved the emphasis on creative packaging with handmade charm. Here’s a glimpse at some of the gifts I gave. Kraft packing paper, washi tape, scrap fabric, tissue paper, stamp tags, and yarn were my go to items.

Family Christmas 2011

Yes, it’s January. Christmas has come and gone, BUT I have yet to share photos from all the festivities. Each year my family selects a “theme.” This past year was “Metallic Christmas” (not all the guys in the fam got on board…as you can see). I tried spray painting a sweater… that was a flop. haha. The next best option, my silver sequin bow.

I will share our Christmas Eve dinner design later this week, but for now… family portraits.
